General Information About Moffat Library

As originally stated in 1887, the mission of the Moffat Library of Washingtonville is the diffusion of useful knowledge. To that end, the library provides access to books, periodicals, newspapers, audio/visual media, adult and youth programs, reference services and a variety of activities for children. We offer our collections and services as a source of information, education, enlightenment and entertainment to all members of our community.

SERVICES

Moffat Library of Washingtonville serves a population of 25,000. The library owns more than 29,000 items with a circulation of over 170,000 a year. Staff answers over 11,000 reference questions annually. Library facilities and programs are handicapped-accessible. Library collection includes: books, books-on-tape, books-on-CD, videos, DVD's, music CD's, CD-Rom's, large print books, magazines, puppets, puzzles.

Library Catalog

The library's book and audiovisual collections are cataloged on ANSER (Automated Network Services), a computerized system that provides instantaneous shelf status and other borrower services. ANSER also includes the holdings of other public libraries in the Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS). Most materials from these libraries may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Library staff is always available to assist in the use of this catalog.

Reserves

Patrons who reside in the library's service area may reserve materials owned by the library but not immediately available.

Interlibrary Loans
Patrons may request materials owned by other libraries, including public, private and university libraries in the region and nationwide. Time required to obtain these materials depends on their location. Call (496-5483) or email (moffat@rcls.org) the library to request books not in the library catalog.

Book Drop
Books and media materials may be returned through the slot next to the front door when the library is closed. Please secure all AV materials before placing in book drop.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Homebound Delivery
Moffat Library offers a delivery and pick up service to our patrons who cannot visit the library due to permanent or temporary disability. Orders can be placed over the telephone and the materials will be brought to the home and then picked up again on or before the due date. All that is necessary is a Moffat Library card.

Computers
An IBM-compatible workstation is available by appointment to Washingtonville Central School District residents age 10 and up. See our Computer Use Policy for details. Copy Machine
Library staff are available to make copies. There is no fee for copying up to 10 black/white pages of library reference materials. Thereafter, the cost is 10 cents per page. Any personal copying will cost $.10 a pagefor black/white photocopies. All color copies will cost & $.75 per page.

Fax Machine
A fax machine is also available for patron use. The cost for an outgoing fax is $2.50 for the first page and $1.00 for each additional page. Incoming faxes cost $.50 per page. The library's fax number is (845) 496-6854.


YOUTH SERVICES

SUMMER
The Library participates in the statewide summer reading program. Special reading activities and program events are planned for preschoolers through fifth graders. In addition, a special Teens & Twelves summer Reading & Volunteer Program is offered for grades 6-12.

SCHOOL YEAR

Storyhours
  • Toddletime
    Toddlers ages 18-month - 35-months, each accompanied by an adult, meets Mondays or Thursdays from 10:30-11:00 a.m.

  • Preschool
    Ages 3 to 5 (excluding Kindergartners) meets Wednesdays from 10:30-11:15 a.m. or 1:00-1:45 p.m.

  • Book Buddies
    After school program for Grades K - 2 meets Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

  • Chat 'N Chew Book Discussions
    After school program for Grades 3 to 5 meets once a month on Mondays from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
There are three sessions of Storytimes - Fall, Winter and Spring - for Moffat Library cardholders. Please call the Library at (845) 496-5483 for more information. Registration is required and must be in person.

In addition, a variety of special programs are scheduled throughout the year. Announcements appear in library fliers and in the library's newsletter.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS


Career Information Center
The library has a comprehensive collection of resources for job-hunters, career-changers, and the college-bound, including videos and software.

Parenting ~ Our large parenting collection is a great resource. Whether you are an expectant mother or an experienced parent, you'll find useful information here!

Local History
~ The library has a small local history collection that is available for use in the library. It includes books on Orange County history, people, & landmarks and is a great source for genealogical info!

Large Print
~ Books are available for the visually impaired.

Books-on-tape/Books-on-CD ~
Whether you are visually impaired or have a long commute to work, Books-on-tape & Books-on-CD are great ways to read!
